Cookie Policy

What we store on your device, why, and how to change your mind — in plain language.

The short version

1. What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep, so it can recognise something on your next visit — that you have already answered the cookie question, for instance. Related browser storage mechanisms do a similar job without sending anything back to the server on each request. We use both sparingly, and this policy covers them together.

2. Our three categories

Essential — always on

These make the site function and record the choice you make about the other two categories. They store no information about your interests and are not used for advertising. Because the site cannot work without them, they do not require consent under Canadian rules.

Analytics — off until you accept

These tell us, in aggregate, which reviews and guides people read and how long they spend on them. That is how we decide which properties to revisit and which guides to expand. If you decline, we collect none of it and the site behaves identically.

Marketing — off until you accept

These let us measure whether our own advertising works — for example, whether someone who arrived from an advertisement went on to read a review. We do not use them to build interest profiles, and we do not sell advertising space to gambling operators.

3. The cookies we use

Third-party cookie names and durations are set by the provider and can change without notice from us. If you accept nothing, only the two essential entries in the first rows above are ever created.

4. Consent Mode

We implement Google Consent Mode v2. In practice this means that when a page loads, every consent signal starts in the denied state:

• analytics_storage — denied
• ad_storage — denied
• ad_user_data — denied
• ad_personalization — denied

Nothing is upgraded to granted until you actively choose it in the banner. If you accept only analytics, only the analytics signal changes; the advertising signals stay denied.

5. Changing or withdrawing consent

• On this site: use the Cookie Settings link in the footer of any page. Your choice takes effect immediately.
• In your browser: every major browser lets you block or delete cookies for a specific site or for all sites. Clearing site data for canadahideaways.com also removes our record of your choice, so the banner will appear again on your next visit.
• Analytics opt-out: Google publishes a browser add-on that prevents its analytics from running on any site.

Blocking cookies entirely will not break this site. The only consequence is that the cookie banner cannot remember your answer, so it will ask again each time.

6. What we do not do

• We do not use cookies to identify you personally.
• We do not sell, rent or trade any data collected through cookies.
• We do not run cross-site advertising networks or share reader data with gambling operators.
• We do not use "cookie walls" — no content on this site is gated behind accepting cookies.
• We do not track any gambling activity, because there is none to track: this site takes no wagers and processes no payments.
