A large gaming floor is the easiest thing for a property to buy and the least reliable indicator of a good trip. Canada has casinos with four thousand slot machines and nothing worth eating, and casinos with six hundred machines attached to one of the best hotels in the country. Ranking them on floor size alone would be useless.
So we score five things separately. The casino floor — its size, the slot mix, how many table games and which ones, whether there is a genuine poker room, a sportsbook lounge, bingo or a high roller area. The hotel — room count, condition, which category to book, and whether the property has rooms at all, because six of the seventeen do not. Dining — whether the restaurants stand up on their own or exist to feed the floor. Entertainment — what the theatre programmes across a year. And value — what you pay against what you get, which is where the Alberta and Saskatchewan properties do unexpectedly well.
The result is a list where Fallsview Casino Resort leads on spectacle and scale, River Rock Casino Resort wins on being the best place to actually spend three nights, Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto has the deepest table game selection in the country, and Casino du Lac-Leamy is the pick if you want the trip to be about more than the casino. Where a property is not a casino hotel in the literal sense — Casino de Montréal has no rooms on its island — we say so in the first line rather than the fine print.
