Casino Niagara

Overview

Casino Niagara opened in 1996 in a converted building at the foot of Clifton Hill and was, for a few years, the biggest thing in Canadian gaming. Fallsview took that crown in 2004, and Casino Niagara settled into a different and arguably more useful role: the approachable, lower-limit, less formal option a ten-minute walk from its larger sibling.

This is a casino, not a casino hotel — there are no rooms on the property. In practice that matters less than it sounds, because it sits in the middle of the densest hotel district in Ontario, and the two Niagara casinos share a loyalty programme and a free shuttle. Many visitors stay at a Clifton Hill hotel and use both floors.

Expect a busy, tourist-facing atmosphere: two levels of gaming, a comedy club, a sports lounge and direct access to the Clifton Hill attractions strip. It is less polished than Fallsview and considerably cheaper to spend an evening in.

The casino floor

Roughly 1,300 slot machines spread over two levels, with a reasonable spread of denominations and a bank of high-limit machines. The slot mix is a little older than Fallsview's but covers the popular modern titles, and the lower-denomination selection is broader — one reason regulars prefer it.

Around 30 table games cover the core set: blackjack, roulette, baccarat and a handful of card games, with the lowest table minimums in the Niagara corridor. There is no poker room. A sports lounge with a screen wall handles major fixtures, and the atmosphere on game nights is livelier than the size suggests.

High-limit provision is limited to a dedicated slot area rather than private salons. Serious high rollers will want Fallsview, ten minutes up the hill.

Hotel & resort

There are no guest rooms at Casino Niagara. Dozens of hotels sit within a five- to fifteen-minute walk, from budget motels on Clifton Hill through to the falls-view towers on Fallsview Boulevard. A free shuttle connects the two casinos and several partner hotels.

If you want the gaming floor and a bed under one roof in Niagara Falls, book Fallsview. If you want cheaper rooms and are happy to walk, staying near Clifton Hill and using Casino Niagara as your base floor is the better-value plan.

Dining

Four or five outlets — a buffet, a sports bar, a burger counter and casual options — priced well below Fallsview and pitched squarely at the tourist market. Perfectly adequate rather than a reason to visit. Clifton Hill's restaurants are immediately outside the door.

Entertainment

A resident comedy club is the main draw, running several nights a week, with live music in the lounge and regular sports broadcast events. The property's real entertainment advantage is location: the Clifton Hill attractions strip, the falls illumination and the Niagara SkyWheel are all within a few minutes' walk.
